''I'm thinking about killing Michael Moore, and I'm wondering if I could kill him myself, or if I would need to hire somebody to do it. ... No, I think I could. I think he could be looking me in the eye, you know, and I could just be choking the life out.'' —Glenn Beck May 17, 2005
I don’t know what is worse, making terroristic threats on national media outlets, or the people who are amused by them. FOX news and various conservative media pundits have exploited their first amendment rights to profit on the ignorance of the American people, and to promote a right-wing, pro-wealthy political agenda. In essence, this militia of opportunists has polarized a significant number of Americans to distrust our government, and distract them from the real issues affecting their daily lives.
The most recent tragedy, which occurred in my hometown of Tucson, Arizona, is a prime example of what can happen when a deranged psychopath is influenced by the lies and deception pumped out of right-wing media outlets. Although, no evidence has made a connection between Jared Lee Laughner, the shooter, and FOX news and other conservative propaganda mouthpieces, the irony is overwhelming.
Take for example, Byron Williams. Remember him? He was a deranged disciple of neocon Glenn Beck who, after getting pulled over by police on the freeway, engaged in a wild west shootout, and confessed how he was on a mission to kill people at the Tides Foundation and the ACLU. His motivation? Glenn Beck’s constant lecture of how President Obama and billionaire George Soros conspired with Brazil’s largest energy company, Petrobras, to blow up the BP oil well in the Gulf of Mexico. WOW!
To Williams, Beck is, “…like a school teacher on T.V.”, as well, as about 1.97 million other crazies, according to his ratings. One fanatic, Maverickgirl, has gone as far on her blog to say, “Glenn Beck is America’s favorite school teacher!”
Well, perhaps he is, for weak-minded, lost Americans who apparently need someone else to think for them. Luckily, for those lost souls, the media waves are ripe with substitute teachers who quickly jumped at the opportunity to earn a quick buck off of America’s ignorance. Newcomer, Sarah Palin, has successfully attracted a flock of pretentious followers since she emerged on the national scene. In a very short time, her arrogant, hateful rhetoric has even scared me! At a rally during her failed campaign as Sen. John McCain’s running mate, an outraged attendee shouted above the crowd to “kill”, then Sen. Barack Obama, after Palin convinced him he was, “…[palling] around with terrorists.”(link) And, let’s not forget the crosshairs she referred to as bull’s eyes on a map she displayed on SaraPac and her Facebook page identifying key targets for the 2010 general election, including Congresswoman Gabrielle Gifford’s House seat of Tucson. Her tweet, “Don’t Retreat, Instead Reload” was a prelude to an invitation her hand-picked Tea Party candidate, Jesse Kelly, posted on his events website, “Get on Target for Victory in November. Help remove Gabrielle Giffords from office. Shoot a fully automatic M16 with Jesse Kelly.” Seriously, coincidence?
Since then, her contributions to the conservative, anti-government, anti-Obama movement have earned her a seat with the Big Boys; Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck. She brings a putrid breath of vitriol to the scene masked by her gotcha vanity. Collectively, the Malevolent 3 and their conservative cronies have polluted the airwaves with sadistic messages. Check out the following:
1. Disturbing "Jokes" About Killing Liberals
Rush Limbaugh:"I tell people don't kill all the liberals. Leave enough so we can have two on every campus--living fossils--so we we'll never forget what these people stood for."
Ann Coulter: "My only regret with Tim McVeigh is that he did not go to the New York Times building"
2. Implied Threats:
Bill O'Reilly: "Americans who work against our military once the [Iraq] war is underway will be considered Enemies of the State by me. Just fair warning to you, Barbara Streisand, and others who see the world as you do. I don't want to demonize anyone, but anyone who hurts this country in a time like this, well, let's just say you will be spotlighted."
3. Overt Threats of Violence against Liberals:
Eric Erickson (Redstate.com): "At what point do [people] get off the couch, march down to their state legislator's house, pull him outside and beat him to a bloody pulp for being an idiot?"
Michael Savage: "I say round liberals up and hang em' high. When I hear someone's in the civil rights business, I oil up my AR-25."
4. Specific Incitements to Violence against Law Enforcement Officers
Dick Morris: "Those crazies in Montana who say 'we're going to kill ATF agents because the UN's going to take over.' Well, they're beginning to have a case."
G . Gorden Liddy (broadcasting advice on how to kill law enforcement officers): "...head-shots, they are wearing body armor, head shots... or shoot for the groin." (link)
And, these are just a sampling of the violent messages often heard on their media programs. But, these violent choice words alone don’t motivate someone to act out. No. It’s the message behind the violent expressions that move people to not just act out, but also hold a disdain for family, friends, and neighbors who happen to affiliate with a particular political party. But, that will be another topic! In the mean time, the American people must take a stand to condemn the use of violent and terroristic rhetoric on the media superhighway.
