Defining Our Identity

Posted by American Patriot on February 10, 2011 at 12:55 AM Comments comments (451)

Finally, I have an opportunity to post what has been on my mind a very long time, and that is the need to define an identity for the Democratic Party. Some people call it Branding, other people call it Positioning, but there is no argument among many prominent rank-and-file Democrats that we need something! The Republicans and their mouthpieces have effectively defined our Party for us, while we are always playing defense to the lies and deception they fabricate.

After all, we are a multi-million dollar organization and the oldest democratic political party in the world! We are the good guys! We are the Party for the People! We are the Party of Compassion! We are the Common Sense Party! We have a track record of Responsible Governing! So, why are so many working families representing every social, economic, and, ethnic background voting for the other guys? Because, the GOP has stolen our Patriotic identity; our Christian identity; our Strong Work Ethic identity; our Family Values identity; and, more importantly, our National identity. That’s why. It is time we Democrats take a stand and take back what is rightfully ours! Nothing pisses me off more than a bunch of thieving hypocrites taking credit for something they are too corrupt to follow themselves.

So, where to begin? What should our mantra be? How do we embody everything and everyone our beloved Party advocates for in just a few words? YOU CAN’T! The Democratic Party is not as one-dimensional and simplistic as the Republican Party, e.g., lower taxes, small government, and strong national defense! We embody the needs and desires of the people, young and old, regardless of their background, ethnicity, religion, gender, lifestyles, or sexual orientation. We believe in responsible governing and common sense approaches to education and quality health care for everyone. In essence, the Democratic Party recognizes all men and women are created equal, and deserve a high quality of Life, with Liberty, and enjoyable Pursuit of Happiness!

While the GOP simply chose a few issues to fight about, the Democratic Party has had the privilege to fight and advocate for a multitude of issues and people. For this reason, we can’t simply sum up our mission statement to just a few words without leaving someone or something out.

Recently, I was honored to have sat in a group led by long time Democrat, Steve Merriam, which was given the opportunity to help develop a positioning statement for the Harris County Democratic Party. The ten of us contributed some really great leads that will eventually be scrutinized by a peer of Democratic leaders representing various social and ethnic groups. The ultimate outcome we anticipate will be the adoption of an approved positioning statement by the local Party and used as a means to communicate to the public about how we are the good guys. We are the Party you want to govern your school district, courthouses, county, city, state, and nation. We are in tune with your needs and desires, because, we ARE you! We live in your neighborhood and our children go to your schools. We drive on the same streets and breathe the same air. It won’t be easy and it won’t happen quickly.

It’s time to get mad, and it’s time to get even! The positioning statement is just one step of many we have to take to gain the respect of our neighbors again. Instead of winning elections by default, as what happened in 2008 when the nation had enough of Bush’s failed policies and poor leadership, we need to win elections, because the people want us and trust that we are the right people for the job!

Provoking America

''I'm thinking about killing Michael Moore, and I'm wondering if I could kill him myself, or if I would need to hire somebody to do it. ... No, I think I could. I think he could be looking me in the eye, you know, and I could just be choking the life out.'' —Glenn Beck May 17, 2005

I don’t know what is worse, making terroristic threats on national media outlets, or the people who are amused by them. FOX news and various conservative media pundits have exploited their first amendment rights to profit on the ignorance of the American people, and to promote a right-wing, pro-wealthy political agenda. In essence, this militia of opportunists has polarized a significant number of Americans to distrust our government, and distract them from the real issues affecting their daily lives.

The most recent tragedy, which occurred in my hometown of Tucson, Arizona, is a prime example of what can happen when a deranged psychopath is influenced by the lies and deception pumped out of right-wing media outlets. Although, no evidence has made a connection between Jared Lee Laughner, the shooter, and FOX news and other conservative propaganda mouthpieces, the irony is overwhelming.

Take for example, Byron Williams. Remember him? He was a deranged disciple of neocon Glenn Beck who, after getting pulled over by police on the freeway, engaged in a wild west shootout, and confessed how he was on a mission to kill people at the Tides Foundation and the ACLU. His motivation? Glenn Beck’s constant lecture of how President Obama and billionaire George Soros conspired with Brazil’s largest energy company, Petrobras, to blow up the BP oil well in the Gulf of Mexico. WOW!

To Williams, Beck is, “…like a school teacher on T.V.”, as well, as about 1.97 million other crazies, according to his ratings. One fanatic, Maverickgirl, has gone as far on her blog to say, “Glenn Beck is America’s favorite school teacher!”

Well, perhaps he is, for weak-minded, lost Americans who apparently need someone else to think for them. Luckily, for those lost souls, the media waves are ripe with substitute teachers who quickly jumped at the opportunity to earn a quick buck off of America’s ignorance. Newcomer, Sarah Palin, has successfully attracted a flock of pretentious followers since she emerged on the national scene. In a very short time, her arrogant, hateful rhetoric has even scared me! At a rally during her failed campaign as Sen. John McCain’s running mate, an outraged attendee shouted above the crowd to “kill”, then Sen. Barack Obama, after Palin convinced him he was, “…[palling] around with terrorists.”(link) And, let’s not forget the crosshairs she referred to as bull’s eyes on a map she displayed on SaraPac and her Facebook page identifying key targets for the 2010 general election, including Congresswoman Gabrielle Gifford’s House seat of Tucson. Her tweet, Don’t Retreat, Instead Reload was a prelude to an invitation her hand-picked Tea Party candidate, Jesse Kelly, posted on his events website, “Get on Target for Victory in November. Help remove Gabrielle Giffords from office. Shoot a fully automatic M16 with Jesse Kelly.” Seriously, coincidence?

Since then, her contributions to the conservative, anti-government, anti-Obama movement have earned her a seat with the Big Boys; Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck. She brings a putrid breath of vitriol to the scene masked by her gotcha vanity. Collectively, the Malevolent 3 and their conservative cronies have polluted the airwaves with sadistic messages. Check out the following:

1. Disturbing "Jokes" About Killing Liberals

Rush Limbaugh:"I tell people don't kill all the liberals. Leave enough so we can have two on every campus--living fossils--so we we'll never forget what these people stood for."

Ann Coulter: "My only regret with Tim McVeigh is that he did not go to the New York Times building"

2. Implied Threats:

Bill O'Reilly: "Americans who work against our military once the [Iraq] war is underway will be considered Enemies of the State by me. Just fair warning to you, Barbara Streisand, and others who see the world as you do. I don't want to demonize anyone, but anyone who hurts this country in a time like this, well, let's just say you will be spotlighted."

3. Overt Threats of Violence against Liberals:

Eric Erickson (Redstate.com): "At what point do [people] get off the couch, march down to their state legislator's house, pull him outside and beat him to a bloody pulp for being an idiot?"

Michael Savage: "I say round liberals up and hang em' high. When I hear someone's in the civil rights business, I oil up my AR-25."

4. Specific Incitements to Violence against Law Enforcement Officers

Dick Morris: "Those crazies in Montana who say 'we're going to kill ATF agents because the UN's going to take over.' Well, they're beginning to have a case."

G . Gorden Liddy (broadcasting advice on how to kill law enforcement officers): "...head-shots, they are wearing body armor, head shots... or shoot for the groin." (link)

And, these are just a sampling of the violent messages often heard on their media programs. But, these violent choice words alone don’t motivate someone to act out. No. It’s the message behind the violent expressions that move people to not just act out, but also hold a disdain for family, friends, and neighbors who happen to affiliate with a particular political party. But, that will be another topic! In the mean time, the American people must take a stand to condemn the use of violent and terroristic rhetoric on the media superhighway.

Congressional Super Bowl 2011

Has America adopted a new pastime? With the NFL claiming the new honor over Baseball, the American public may have also embraced politics as a key interest in their hectic lives, at least for this 112th Congress. As if working Americans need more stress in their life, a new surge of congressional freshmen and conservative optimism will work tirelessly to please the misguided rank-and-file Republican voters who claim victory electing the new House majority. Will they meet their expectations?

While most of the voting public has placed their bets, i.e.…livelihoods, on the GOP to return this country into top fiscal responsible shape, they will need to pray for a miracle. The last fiscally conservative President was President Richard Nixon. Not even the conservative pagan idol, Ronald Reagan, can take credit for shrinking the government and cutting government spending. That recognition deservingly belongs to Bill Clinton. In fact, the following statistics will help explain what FOX News, Rush Limbaugh, and the other media terrorists are hiding from their followers:

• Republican Administrations have accrued, more than 3 fold, the debt that Democrats has made             since President Richard Nixon

President Reagan (1981-1989)

• Reagan tripled the Gross Federal Debt, from $900 billion to $2.7 trillion

• 1981, introduced ERTA, biggest tax reduction in history, resulting in $268 billion loss of revenue

• 1982, Reagan reversed most provisions in ERTA with TEFRA; largest tax increase in history

• Also, in 1982, the unemployment rate peaked at 10.8%

President George H. W. Bush (1989-1993)

• “Read My Lips, No New Taxes!” President Bush senior lied, and raised taxes

• Increased the National Debt 32.7%

President George W. Bush (2001-2009)

• Added $4 Trillion to national debt • Worse job creation under President George W. Bush, 3%

• More than 3 million jobs lost under President George W. Bush

• Largest federal spending growth since President Nixon

• Sub-prime mortgage meltdown, under George W. Bush resulting in millions of foreclosures

So, why has the GOP branded itself as the “fiscal conservative” party? Perhaps, it’s because they knew if they were going to get away with representing big business and the filthy rich, they needed a gimmick to con the American people into supporting their self-serving agendas. With the Tea Party arguing they are the real “wannabe fiscal conservatives”, it will be interesting to see how they try and change the Republican playbook on fiscal economic policies.

But, rest assured, their eagerness to repeal “Obamacare” and other victories secured by Obama, will only prove to be a temporary display of enthusiastic lawmakers itching to score their first touchdown for their loyal fans. They will pass and try to fake their way to the end zone, but they will gain very little yardage. With the Democrats holding strong defense in the Senate, and the President holding his veto pen, Republicans just won’t own any notable victories this session.

It's Their Turn

Just around the corner from now, a frenzied group of newly elected Tea Party electeds and their Republican coaches will burst into their House and Senate chambers with such dynamism and determination, one might be mistaken a government takeover is taking place...Or is there?

But, let’s not kid ourselves. This new marriage of old conservative ideologies will only screw things up. First of all, there will be a rank of newly elected Tea Party representatives, including Kentucky favorite Rand Paul, who, speaking on behalf of Team Tea Party, has pledged to take his government back. Mostly inexperienced, these new “outsiders” lack central leadership and will be dependant on the very incumbents they rallied “are the problem” to coach them in their new job. But, they are nonconformists, tough, and on a mission for America! What could quite possibly get in their way?

Well, how about 222 years of political establishment? Oh, and how about making tough choices voting on budgets and appropriations already negotiated by the entrenched Republican and Democratic lawmakers and President? And, don’t forget the lobbyists, too! Considering about 35 newly elected Tea Party legislatures have never held a political office, I won’t put any money on their ability to fulfill any of their campaign promises. I think the former congressman, Robert Walker, who helped engineer the Republicans’ take over in 1994, said it best:

"You come to town with the belief that you have all these opportunities to influence national policy. The thing we found when we came to power in 1995 was that governing is hard. When you're in the minority, you can fight great ideological battles. When you actually govern ... you have to develop the art of compromise, and that's difficult."

Welcome to the Party of No! Now, they will be in charge (at least, in the House) and instead of saying “no, no, no, no,” they will have to lead the agendas. Such as, “defunding” the new Health Care bill and, as Sen. Mitch McConnell has arrogantly stated, “The single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president.” But, when they are not working on that, they pledge to cut spending and create jobs. Oh, wait…I must have been reading the Contract with America from 1994...  Or, was it one of the countless speeches by President George W. Bush...  Ah, found it. It was the Pledge to America 2010... Wait! They all say the same thing--cut government spending and create jobs.  But, our government and federal spending grew under President Reagan and both Bush’s. And, Democrats have created more jobs than Republicans since President Truman. That means they must be lying to deceive the American public so they can push their REAL agenda…BIG BUSINESS!

Watch out America, and hold on tight!  it's going to be a bumpy ride the next two years!  More on their "real" agenda soon!  Happy New Year!

Tax Cuts For The Wealthy, The Middle, and The Poor

Posted by American Patriot on December 18, 2010 at 12:44 PM Comments comments (0)

President Obama signs tax-cut bill into law to the delight of Republican leadership, and, to the dismay of Democratic lawmakers. The GOP is jubilant for what they consider is a fanatic victory for their Party, their wealthy friends and contributors, and, of course, their ego. Their rank-and-file ought to be real proud of the outcome of the bill, too, as their leadership displayed unrelenting rigor to the President who secured tax-breaks they selfishly and deniably will enjoy.

Democrats, on the other hand, are just beside themselves, as they feel their leader abandoned his principles and their urgent plea to deny business-protecting Republicans their irrational demands. But, the deal was made and the bill was signed, and we all have to live with it. But, is it really that bad?

All right, so the wealthy got another break. At least our President secured hard working American families a significant tax break for two years, extended unemployment benefits for an extra 13 months, and, cut the Social Security tax rate for one year. In addition to a slew of other tax breaks, the bill patches the Alternative Minimum Tax for two years, and extends the college tuition tax credit, child tax credit and Earned Income Tax Credit for two years. There, happy?

Of course not! I will never forget how the GOP held hard working and struggling families hostage for such a minority of wealthy Americans and businesses forcing the President of the United States to falter on his principles and campaign promises to end the Bush-era tax cuts and other tits they’re sucking off the American taxpayers. If there was ever a time the GOP has revealed favoritism for one group over another, it is the political posturing they displayed this lame-duck session. Forget about the hard working Americans who show up to work everyday struggling from paycheck to paycheck. Forget about the 15 million unemployed Americans struggling day-to-day wondering how they are going to pay their rent. Forget about the $13.8 trillion debt our great-great grandchildren are going to continue to struggle with their entire lifetime. The GOP has a best friend—Big Business—and, when big business wants something, Republicans deliver at whatever cost.

With this said, I’m proud of President Barack Obama.  Despite criticism he received from his own Party about his negotiating skills (or, lack of), he got more out of the deal than his adversaries. Let’s not forget, the GOP said NO to extending unemployment benefits to the unemployed. The GOP said NO to extending tax breaks to working Americans.  The GOP said NO to every element of President Obama’s plan to help the poor and middle-class during these enduring economic times, to such an extent, they blatantly sent a letter, signed by all the GOP senators, to President Obama threatening to filibuster all legislation Democrats would file unless their wealthy friends got their renewed tax breaks.  But, we ended up getting them anyways, right? So, lets stop being so critical of our president and be proud of the deal he struck with the brick wall he was negotiating with!

Why I Am A Democrat!

Posted by American Patriot on December 17, 2010 at 7:06 PM Comments comments (0)

I think it is appropriate to make my first blog entry about why I am a Democrat.  After all, it's important for the reader to know who the author is, and why I am an advocate for the Democratic Party.

I am a Democrat, first and foremost, because, they put America and her citizens first!  The Democratic Party is the People Party and is inclusive of all ideas, dreams, desires, races, genders, affiliations, religions, creeds, etc., etc.  Democratic leadership fights for justice, equality and high standards of living for all people in a safe, clean and renewable environment. Fundamentally, the Democratic Party exemplifies the true spirit of what America represents and symbolizes!

The GOP, on the other hand, represents business and corporate interests FIRST before Americans. They are exclusive of common sense ideas and rationale.  And, although, they claim to be a diverse Party, their party platform, agendas, personal opinions, personal attacks, and image personifies a homogeneous America.  In addition, the very character, attitude and nature of Republicans from top GOP elected representatives to many of their rank-and-file is hate, bigotry, hypocrisy and anger.

Although I recognize faults within my Party, and I don’t always agree with my leadership or Party platform, I’m proud to be a Democrat.   I don't look at it as a choice between one side or the other, but, rather how one side wholeheartedly cares about my existence, my safety, and the quality of life for me, my family, and America in general.
